So, this blog will all be about coffee machines and my research into the world of what makes a great cup of coffee – all started by the fact that for some reason i was looking for information on a pump espresso machine.
Anyway I would now like to start on this epic article that will be the first for me in coffee and bring me 1 step closer to knowing all things coffee machines, even if I never have a coffee maker, myself;)
So, where to start, my first exploration into the world of coffee machines showed me that I had grossly underestimated the whole area and that there is a huge amount to learn.
Should I get a pump or steam powered machine, how about a manual or semi automatic, or even a fully automatic version for that matter. Version of what, would be a better question!
How much pressure should the water be driven through the coffee grounds; how hot should the water be (shouldn’t it just be like 100 degrees ie boiling water?); how much grinding is enough grinding? (there seems to be just as much debate over coffee grinders as there is over coffee machines); do i spend more on a coffee machine, grinder and everything else that goes into making a fresh cup of coffee than I do on a fridge? Will my wife be happy about that (she drinks herbal tea - yuck!)?
Anyway, enough questions, this blog will be all about my discovery and exploration of all things coffee machines (haven’t I said that already) and in the hope that over a few weeks, months even years, it will build up into some kind of repository that may eventually lead me to buying my very own coffee machine, and who knows maybe a pump espresso machine at that! (you see, i don’t jump into things likely lightly).

At the moment I am probably going to be laughed at by anyone out there who likes coffee – I drink Nescafe Gold blend with milk from the fridge (milk in first of course) and boiling water. If I go out, I get a Starbucks cappuccino (Venti and skinny), and that is really where my knowledge of coffee ends.
The best coffee I ever had? in a plastic cup atop St Peters in the Vatican City – lovely coffee with a creamy bit on top (crema I think is the technical word).
Anyway, enough, as you can see this will also be a light hearted blog as I don’t take myself (too) seriously. Please don’t mock my choice of drink – its all I know – at least I am lookng at ways of improving my taste and maybe passing on some of that knowledge to others. Well, ok, if you must moch(a) then at least be civil – and do it in the comments below:)
So first off whats next – well lots of research – at the moment I’m thinking that I will be doing a fair bit of work on different types of machines, grinders and the process of making a coffee or espresso. And what actually makes a good cup of coffee and why it is so different than that of an instant brew anyway.
So please join me on my coffee discovery path and see where it will take us and please if you stumble across this blog, please drop me a comment and let me know what you think.
